Bruiser
A Character Study (Dedicated to my friend, Scott. May he rest in peace.)
He was a bruiser from way back. His body bore the scars of a million battles, the worst of which shattered his innards. Shards of broken bits working their way to the surface caused more pain than any external wound ever could.
He’d like to think he had life figured out, but he would prove himself wrong more often than not. People he trusted betrayed him. People he suspected of unbearable deception became his lifeline when his own mortality reared up and kicked him in the teeth.
A man of many faces, he rarely recognized his true visage reflected in car windows zipping past. Still, the thrum of his origins flowed thick in his veins, traveled through his toughened ventricles, and oozed out to the capillaries under his rippling skin. The twinging nerves and aching joints served to remind him that he was alive. Oh yes, alive and elusive, as he had to be to survive. Besides, he had a few debts to collect and a few more to repay before he could rest.
