“What’s that noise?” Janna Acworth paused the movie she was watching. She glanced at her mom reclined on the chaise sofa surrounded by stacks of documents.

“What noise?” murmured Sylvia Acworth. Her slender fingers never missed a beat as she entered text in the laptop perched on her knees.

Thwomp. Thwomp. Thwomp. Thwomp. Thwomp.

“That noise.” Janna tossed aside the remote and headed for the back door. “Sounds like it's coming from Mr. and Mrs. Denzer’s yard. Creepy couple.”

Sylvia dragged her gaze away from the laptop. “John and Nancy are not creepy. Slightly eccentric, but who isn’t, really.” She untangled herself from her paperwork and laptop cord and followed Janna. She killed the interior lights as she went.

“Mom, it is one-thirty in the morning and we’re hearing strange sounds from their yard. What’s not creepy about that?”

“Well, we’re still up watching T.V. Are we creepy?”

“I’m sixteen and nocturnal by nature. He is your age. He should be sleeping, but…he is weird.” She opened the door with stealth and slipped out to the patio.

“See anything?” Sylvia whispered.

“Too dark.”

Thwomp. Thwomp. Thwomp. Thwomp. Thwomp.
