Shuttered Towns
Strategic Pause as a COVID-19 Battle Tactic
Quiet streets in a quiet, western town. Damp pavement reflects the glow of lights illuminating the echo of recent crowds. A meandering river searches for her fans. Empty tables coated in the thinnest hint of dust in these early days of social distancing.
This is Texas, where dust multiplies faster than the number of new corona positives, and will soon lay thick on those barren surfaces where humans once congregated. Tumbleweed strolls past storefronts. The Alamo ghosts peer with sad eyes from behind shuttered windows. No strangers, they, to the tension-filled hush that descends before a battle.
One day soon, the winds will come and sweep away the dust. Rain will fall and wash anew all it touches. San Antonio will bustle and shine with her sister cities across this nation and around the globe. We’ve only to pause, rest, reflect until a superbug starves into submission.
