Sherry Abbott grabbed the basket of clean clothes and headed for the stairs. Along the way, she wrestled her daughter’s stuffed teddy bear from the jaws of their gray cat Mimi. No easy feat, as Mimi had it pinned to the piano bench in a freakish cat wrestling move. She climbed the stairs with Mimi following close behind and tiptoed into Jessica’s room. She tucked the bear under her daughter’s arm. Jessica sighed, shifting in her sleep.

Mimi leaped on the bed and claimed a spot near Jessica’s shoulder. Her green eyes darted from the sleeping child to the teddy bear before glancing up at Sherry. She let out a shrill meow.

“Shush!” Sherry rubbed the cat between the ears and then scratched under her chin. “Be a good kitty.” Turning, Sherry headed to her room with the rest of the laundry.

Mimi huffed out a kitty sigh and fixed her gaze on the teddy bear.

“Dinner’s ready,” Sherry called later that evening, as she carried rolls and butter to the table. The sound of stomping feet on stairs made her smile. “Lyle, are you hungry?”

“Yeah, babe.” Lyle Abbott strolled into the kitchen. On his way by, he cupped Sherry’s ass and squeezed. She laughed, all breathy and light, and Lyle chuckled.

The kids tumbled into the dining room, arms, and legs flying.
